Clement VI (1291 to 1352): Pope at Avignon, known for gross nepotism; at the same time he protected the Jews with bulls during the plague
Pierre Roger was pope at Avignon from 1342 to 1352. The Catholic Encyclopedia writes that his memory is clouded by open French partisanship and gross nepotism. During the plague of 1348/49, when Jews were murdered in many places, he issued bulls of protection and offered them refuge. He excommunicated Louis the Bavarian and had Cola di Rienzo excommunicated.
