The founder of the Schönstatt Movement was banished to the USA in 1951 after a Vatican inquiry and lived in Milwaukee until he returned in 1965. According to Vatican News in 2021, an American accuses him of having sexually abused him between 1958 and 1962. The allegations were known to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee from 1994, and the Diocese of Trier had assessed its report as coherent in the beatification process. In 2021 the Bishop of Trier ordered a new review. These are allegations, not findings.

Course of events

1. Kentenich lived from 1885 to 1968. After a Vatican inquiry he was sent into exile in the USA in 1951, lived in Milwaukee and returned to Schönstatt in 1965. A beatification process has been running since 1975.

Response of the Church

1. The allegations were known to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee from 1994. Its tribunal then saw no reason to pursue the matter. The Diocese of Trier received the documents and assessed the report as coherent. In 2021 the Bishop of Trier ordered a new review. The movement stated that it had known of the accusations since 1997 but had neither known concrete allegations nor seen the files.
