L'Arche 1950 to 2019: Study commission documents sexual abuse by the Dominican Thomas Philippe and the founder Jean Vanier; a sectarian circle outlived the condemnation by the Holy Office in 1956
A study commission mandated by L'Arche International presented a report in January 2023 on the Dominican Thomas Philippe and his disciple Jean Vanier, founder of the worldwide communities for people with intellectual disabilities. In the 1950s the Holy Office had condemned Philippe for serious offences "of a pseudo-mystical nature"; the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith called Vanier his most fanatical disciple. The circle around the two outlived the 1956 sanctions and lived on in the shadow of L'Arche. The commission learned of 25 women who between 1952 and 2019 experienced sexual acts or intimate gestures with Vanier, and identified 23 people sexually abused by Philippe. It speaks of a culture of concealment and lies; the Church's secrecy about the reasons for Philippe's condemnation helped preserve his reputation for holiness.

What happened to the people
Who was affected? Victims and numbers
- The commission learned of 25 women who, in their relationship with Jean Vanier, mostly in spiritual accompaniment, experienced sexual acts or intimate gestures; the cases range from 1952 to 2019, and 14 of the women were or are members of L'Arche. It also identified 23 people who had been sexually abused by Thomas Philippe. According to the commission both figures are clearly below the real number. It analysed the mechanisms of both men: influence, sexual abuse, collective delusion, theological corruption, spiritual abuse and manipulation.

How were they charged and sentenced?
- According to a 1975 document of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Thomas Philippe was tried and sentenced for serious offences of a pseudo-mystical nature; the document calls Jean Vanier the most fanatical of his disciples. For the period of the L'Eau Vive community the Holy Office investigation concluded that 33 people were involved. The 1956 sanctions did not end the sectarian core; after a decade of isolation Philippe returned, and the Congregation gradually lost the memory of the danger he posed.

Background
Why? Justification and motives (according to the sources)
- The commission asks whether L'Arche was founded to serve as a screen for the activities of the initiated circle. According to the report the original intention of Vanier and former members of L'Eau Vive was to gather around Philippe, freed in 1964; the "mystical-sexual" beliefs received from him were the cement that united them. This intention coexisted from the start with a sincere devotion to people with disabilities.

Response of the Church
- According to the commission a culture of concealment and lies prevailed in the circle around the two; Vanier still gave proof of it after 2014 by denying any knowledge of his master's acts. After Philippe's return to France he enjoyed the sympathy of successive Dominican provincials, who were taken in by the image of the repentant penitent. The secrecy with which the Holy Office surrounded moral cases, and the non-disclosure of the exact causes of his condemnation, helped according to the commission to preserve his reputation for holiness. A report to the civil courts is not mentioned in any of the sources.
