Christian von Wernich, police chaplain during the Argentine military dictatorship
During the military dictatorship in Argentina (1976 to 1983), security forces abducted thousands of people to secret detention centres, tortured and murdered them. The Catholic priest Christian von Wernich was chaplain of the police of the Province of Buenos Aires under police chief Ramón Camps. He visited prisoners in the torture centres, pressed them to confess and, according to witnesses, made jokes about their torture marks. In 2007 a federal court in La Plata sentenced him to life imprisonment: as a participant in 42 abductions, 31 cases of torture and 7 murders, crimes against humanity "in the context of the genocide". The judgment has been final since 2010.

Witness accounts and records
Translation (unofficial)
This man touched the hairs on his chest and made jokes about it [the torture had burned them]. Then one of the young men, Néstor Bozzi, knelt down, took the visitor's hand and said: "Father, I don't want to die." The accused replied: "My son, the life of men is decided by God and your cooperation." Bozzi is one of the prisoners who are still missing today.
Señaló que la actitud de la Iglesia como institución fue escandalosamente cercana a la dictadura, con un grado de complicidad pecaminosa: no es que la Iglesia mató, pero no salvó y por no haberlas salvados es responsable de esas vidas.
Translation (unofficial)
He said that the attitude of the Church as an institution had been scandalously close to the dictatorship, with a degree of sinful complicity: it was not that the Church killed, but it did not save, and because it did not save them it is responsible for those lives.
Background
Why? Justification and motives (according to the sources)
- According to the court, he used the priestly habit to feign pastoral care. The presence of a priest in the secret prison could have made the prisoners believe that their detention was lawful and raised hopes that were never fulfilled; his words were another form of torture, "perhaps the cruellest, that of the soul".
