Dominican Republic 2008 to 2015: Papal nuncio Józef Wesołowski is dismissed from the clerical state for abusing minors and indicted in the Vatican; he dies before a verdict
Archbishop Józef Wesołowski was the Pope's ambassador to the Dominican Republic from January 2008 and resigned from this office in August 2013. In June 2014 the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith sentenced him at first instance to dismissal from the clerical state; until then, according to the Vatican, he had enjoyed relative freedom of movement. In September 2014 he was placed under house arrest in the Vatican, charged with serious acts of abuse of minors in the Dominican Republic. In June 2015 the Vatican court committed him to trial, also for possession of child pornography in Rome. On 28 August 2015, before any verdict, he was found dead in his residence in the Vatican.

How were they charged and sentenced?
- The first instance of the canonical penal proceedings at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ended in June 2014 with the former nuncio's dismissal from the clerical state. The Vatican acknowledged that until then Wesołowski had enjoyed relative freedom of movement while the congregation examined the allegations. In August 2014 he appealed; according to the Vatican he had already lost his diplomatic functions and the related immunity.

Original - On 23 September 2014 the Promoter of Justice of the Vatican court summoned Wesołowski and notified him of the charges for serious acts of abuse of minors in the Dominican Republic; because of his health he was placed under house arrest within the Vatican. By decree of 6 June 2015 the president of the court committed him to trial: for the period in Rome from August 2013 for possession of child pornography, and for the five years as nuncio on the basis of evidence from the judicial authorities in Santo Domingo on sexual abuse of minors.

What happened to those affected?
- On the morning of 28 August 2015 Wesołowski was found dead in his residence in the Vatican; initial examinations indicated natural causes, and the Promoter of Justice ordered an autopsy. The criminal trial thus never reached a verdict.
