Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1545 to 1617): Prince-Bishop of Würzburg who banished preachers, forced subjects to emigrate and conducted witch trials
Julius Echter was Prince-Bishop of Würzburg from 1573 and founded the university and the Juliusspital. From 1584, according to the ADB, he travelled the country with Jesuits, removed preachers and dismissed officials who did not attend mass. The NDB writes that he forcibly brought subjects back or compelled them to emigrate, and that the witch trials too stood under this sign. The Catholic Encyclopedia cites the banishment of Lutheran preachers and about 100,000 returns.
