Witch persecution in the prince-bishoprics of Bamberg, Würzburg and Eichstätt 1612 to 1631: The worst persecutions in Europe took place in ecclesiastical principalities
According to the Historisches Lexikon Bayerns, the worst witch persecutions known in Europe took place in some ecclesiastical principalities in the first half of the 17th century, with some 6,000 deaths in total. In the prince-bishoprics of Bamberg and Würzburg 900 to 1,200 people each fell victim in the last phase around 1626 to 1630, in the prince-bishopric of Eichstätt several hundred between 1612 and 1637. The victims were women, men and children of all ranks, in Würzburg also many clergy. The rulers were the prince-bishops; the lexicon stresses that they did not act alone but with officials, advisers and lawyers, and that the financial interests of the persecutors also played a part.

What happened to the people
Who was affected? Victims and numbers
- According to the Historisches Lexikon Bayerns ecclesiastical principalities held a special position: in some of them the worst persecutions known in Europe were carried out in the first half of the 17th century, with some 6,000 deaths in total; about a quarter of those affected in the Empire lived in ecclesiastical territories. The persecutions were particularly intense in the Franconian prince-bishoprics around 1626 to 1630, when 900 to 1,200 people each fell victim in Bamberg and Würzburg; from 1616 there had already been waves of trials in Zeil am Main and Gerolzhofen.

„der in Bamberg und in Würzburg jeweils im gesamten Territorium zwischen 900 und 1.200 Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Bereits ab 1616 war es in beiden Territorien in den peripheren Amtsstädten Zeil am Main und Gerolzhofen zu Prozesswellen gekommen.“

In Bamberg a disproportionate number of men from the political elite were executed; in Würzburg a considerable group of Catholic clergy was targeted, and men made up more than half of those executed there. The chancellor of the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg wrote in August 1629 that he had seen children of seven and students of ten to fifteen put to death.

How were they charged and sentenced?
- According to Burr the trial of the 55-year-old Bamberg burgomaster Johannes Junius in 1628 is a typical example: he was examined without torture, denied, was tortured with thumb-screws and burned after his confession.

Background
Why? Justification and motives (according to the sources)
- According to the lexicon the financial interests of the persecutors formed a not insignificant element of the accusations; various social groups could profit from the trials privately, financially or professionally. At the same time the lexicon contradicts the popular charge that the Catholic Church was primarily responsible: the princes decried as "witch bishops" did not act alone but with clerical and secular officials, advisers and specialists. The influence of clergy's sermons on public opinion, however, should not be underestimated.

Response of the Church
- In the prince-bishopric of Eichstätt several hundred people were executed between 1612 and 1637; under Prince-Bishop Johann Christoph von Westerstetten, whom the lexicon calls ready to persecute, the trials took on the character of systematic persecution. The Bamberg auxiliary bishop and vicar general Friedrich Förner dedicated to him his 35 sermons on witches, printed in 1626. In the prince-bishopric of Bamberg, according to the Neue Deutsche Biographie, the witch burnings reached their height at the end of the 1620s under Prince-Bishop Johann Georg II Fuchs von Dornheim; the Deutsche Biographie lists for him the name form "Johann Georg, the witch burner". According to the NDB the witch persecution in the prince-bishopric of Würzburg is inseparably linked to Prince-Bishop Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg.
