Who was affected? Victims and numbers

  1. According to the Historisches Lexikon Bayerns, in the prince-bishoprics of Bamberg and Würzburg between 900 and 1,200 people each fell victim in the persecution phase around 1626 to 1630. The lexicon stresses that for many contemporaries the sermons of clergy were the only access to learned discourse on witchcraft and that their influence on public opinion should not be underestimated. See the entry witch persecution in the Franconian prince-bishoprics.
