Scotland 1953 to 1983: At the Christian Brothers' St Ninian's home, according to the inquiry, sexual abuse was endemic throughout
The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry found in 2021 that children at the Christian Brothers' St Ninian's home in Falkland (Fife) were sexually, physically and emotionally abused from about 1953 until its closure in 1983. Sexual abuse was endemic throughout, and the Brothers could select their victims without fear of discovery. Children suffered bruising and bleeding from rapes, runaways were beaten, complaints were not believed. The order transferred two Brothers to St Ninian's despite allegations and ignored a clear warning. Two former Brothers were convicted. The order now accepts the abuse and apologised.

Background
Response of the Church
- According to the inquiry, the transfer to St Ninian's of two Brothers against whom allegations of sexual impropriety with children had already been made was a systemic failure of the order; a clear warning not to place one of them in a residential school was ignored. Children who ran away were beaten on their return; if they complained, they were not believed. The order now accepts widespread abuse including intolerable and reprehensible sexual abuse and apologised to survivors.
