Scotland, Benedictine schools Fort Augustus and Carlekemp 1948 to 1991 (Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry 2021)
In 2021 the state Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry found that children in the boarding schools of the Benedictine abbey of Fort Augustus, Carlekemp Priory School in North Berwick and Fort Augustus Abbey School, were sexually, physically and emotionally abused, up to and including rape. A child who reported abuse was accused of lying by the headmaster and later punished; one perpetrator was sent to Australia and continued abusing there. Two former monks were convicted.

What happened to the people
Who was affected? Victims and numbers
- At Carlekemp a group of paedophile monks preyed on vulnerable children. At Fort Augustus monks sexually abused children, up to and including oral sex and rape, and bound their victims to themselves through a mixture of brutality and affection. A lay teacher photographed naked pupils. Because monks moved between the two schools, perpetrators were able to abuse children at both.

Witness accounts and records
“Between the ages of 8 and 12 I was mentally, physically and sexually abused by priests…I could find no escape, locked as I was into the closed system of the Catholic faith…I certainly could not tell my mother, she being a faithful Catholic.
I never was able to reconcile in my years at Carlekemp and Fort Augustus the message of the Gentle Carpenter of Nazareth on the one hand and all the belting and beating and cruelty that went on on the other.
Background
Why? Justification and motives (according to the sources)
- Children who knew they would not be believed kept silent. Strictly Catholic parents dismissed complaints because they did not think it possible that Catholic monks would abuse children. The monks were not trained to care for boarding pupils.
Evidence: Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (Schottland), Summary, S. x (PDF-S. 12)
„Complaints made to devout‑Catholic parents were rejected because they would not accept it was possible that Catholic monks would abuse children.“

Who received the assets, who profited?
- A monk (pseudonym "Andrew Jones") gave an eleven- to thirteen-year-old pupil many gifts, including money, and for a time himself paid his school fees when the parents could not afford them; the boy knew nothing of this. A monk testifying as a witness suggested that statements by former pupils might be influenced by the prospect of compensation. The chair rejected this: there was clear evidence of the abuse and no indication that anyone had been motivated by compensation.

Response of the Church
- A child reported sexual abuse by a monk to the headmaster of Fort Augustus. He was accused of lying and the police were not informed; when he told his parents and they complained, the headmaster punished the child physically. In another case the perpetrator was sent to Australia. There was no warning about known perpetrators who left Fort Augustus; one later abused children in Australia.
